Standard Chartered predicts a surge in stablecoin supply to $2 trillion by 2028, fueled by the expected passage of the US GENIUS Act. The legislation aims to formalize the legal framework for stablecoins, which Standard Chartered believes will drive $1.6 trillion in new demand for US Treasury bills. The report, authored by Geoffrey Kendrick, head of digital assets research at StanChart, anticipates significant growth in stablecoins if the bill is signed into law by summer. The GENIUS Act mandates fully reserved stablecoins with a preference for highly liquid US assets like T-bills, leading to large-scale purchases of government debt.
